Medical Room
Our Medical Room is for non-emergencies such as a headache, stomach ache, toothache and general first aid and is open every day during break and lunchtimes for students to access. If a student needs to come to the Medical Room during lesson time a teacher will decide whether to send them there and will provide a written note. Our Medical Room is not a substitute for a visit to the GP and will not provide students with notes to miss PE lessons (parents need to provide this for their child to bring to school).
The rules around medicines in schools are very strict. Paracetamol will only be administered from 10.35am – 1.15pm. Should a student require medication during school hours we require a consent form to be completed. This can be obtained from the Medical Room. Alternatively students can bring in written permission stating the name of the medication, child’s name, dosage and the time that it is required. This must be signed by a parent/carer.
All medication must be handed in to Reception before registration, with the exception of epi-pens and asthma inhalers. Students are not allowed to carry medication around with them. Please ensure that girls carry their own supply of sanitary wear. The Medical Room will carry a small stock for genuine emergencies.
The decision as to whether a child should be sent home will be made by the on-duty First Aider who will contact the relevant parent/carer to advise them of the situation. It is very important that parents/carers inform the school of any changes to their child’s medical condition. This includes use of crutches, broken bones or changes in ongoing medication. Should an emergency occur, the school must have the most up to date information.
If an ambulance is required for a child then the parent/carer is contacted. The child will always be accompanied to hospital by a member of staff if the parent/carer cannot get to the school in time.
If you need to discuss any of your child’s medical issues with someone at the school please call Reception and ask for the Medical Room.
Ofsted
Fernhill School and Language College was inspected by Ofsted in September 2012. Ofsted placed the school in special measures and identified key areas for the school to work on. Full details are available on the Ofsted website. The report of the Ofsted inspection carried out on 12 and 13 September was published in the week commencing Monday 12 November. A copy was sent home together with a covering letter from Mr Collins and the next day a follow-up letter included a copy of the School Improvement Plan.
The school received a monitoring visit on 10 January 2013 and the resulting letter from Her Majesty's Inspector Chris Wood has been received.
Parents are kept informed of progress with a regular 'Ofsted Update' in the Fernhill Post.
